La tragica morte del marchese De Portago nella Mille Miglia del 1957 e i successivi incidenti che avvennero a Monza e Le Mans determinarono la chiusura di tutti i circuiti cittadini nazionali, fatta eccezione solo per Montecarlo. Questo portò anche la fine della Coppa Acerbo (poi Gran Premio di Pescara) ma nel ’63 si torna a correre e questa volta si sceglie Popoli, dando vita così alla oramai prestigiosa Cronoscalata Svolte di Popoli un tracciato famoso già al tempo della Mille Miglia, dove si diedero battaglia i più famosi piloti gentlemen drivers con le vetture più prestazionali dell’epoca.

Di qui la voglia di commemorare i grandi nomi del passato ed i grandi marchi che resero celebre quest’epoca oramai lontana.

Ed ecco così la nascita della Svolte di Popoli Classica – Coppa Ugo Barone una rievocazione del passato con le auto che hanno fatto la storia. Una gara senza tempo.

HISTORY

After the tragic death of the Marquise De Portago during the Mille Miglia race of 1957 and the car accidents that later occurred at Monza and Le Mans, all the national circuits, with the  exception of the Montecarlo one, were closed. In 1962 the races finally resumed at Città Sant’Angelo in Abruzzo (Italy) where the first Belvedere Cup took place; resulting in a complete change of scenery just one year later.

From Città Sant’Angelo the race was definitively moved to Popoli thereby creating the now prestigious race “Cronoscalata Svolte di Popoli” on a circuit which was already famous at the time of the Mille Miglia. The most famous gentlemen drivers had competed there with the most performing cars of the time.

To commemorate the greatest drivers of the past and the most prestigious car brands which have made that time era so famous, the “Svolte di Popoli Classica – Coppa Ugo Barone” was established. The best historical cars are here welcomed to remember past glories in a race without time.
